As an alternative to mechanical demolition, deconstruction disassembles a building by hand, reversing the construction process with the aim of maximizing the preservation of materials for reuse.  At the end of this process, instead of a bill for materials disposal at the landfill, you have useable building materials and fixtures, which can be reused onsite, carrying their history and character into your next project, or donated to a reuse nonprofit for a tax deduction.
